11 Predictions 🔮: How Apple Vision Pro Will Change The Human Experience (HX)
The 🌏 Will Look Very Different In The Next 10-15 Years
Hello, it’s me again.
Unless you have been living under a rock, I’m sure you would have heard about Apple’s recent product announcement - Apple Vision Pro; a mixed reality device which creates “phygital” experiences i.e. physical & digital.
In today’s newsletter, I’ve come up with 10 bold predictions as to how the Apple Vision Pro will change the human experience in the next 10-15 years.
Disclaimer: I still feel that the below predictions are 5-10 years away (minimum). The initial version of the Apple Vision Pro reminds me of the first iPhone. It’s revolutionary, but not great for the mainstream consumer. I expect the next 3-5 iterations to be much more powerful (and accessible to the mainstream consumer).
11 Predictions 🔮: How Mixed Reality Will Change The Human Experience (HX) In The Next 10-15 Years
Before I get into the predictions, I just want to set the scene with two observations. V1 of this product is an inflection point which changes the way that humans behave, and also opens up a new technology ecosystem (visionOS):
How the Apple Vision Pro will work: Users will be able to select and run apps from menus they see floating in their living room, office or other real-world environment. They’ll use voice commands, subtle hand gestures and eye movements to manipulate these objects and apps.
A new Operating System & App Store: The Vision Pro inaugurates a new operating system, visionOS and a new Vision app store, where users will be able to access an anticipated flood of AR and VR apps.
Prediction #1 - TVs & Desktop Computer Screens Will Become Obsolete 📺
“Head-mounted external monitors” will remove the need for users to connect their laptops to an external monitor. Similarly, there will be no need for families to fight over the TV remote, as it simply will not exist. Immersive spaces will be used to display multiple screens, at once.
To support this prediction, check out a recent whitepaper released by Microsoft which highlighted proven productivity benefits associated with very large displays, or arrays of different displays.
Prediction #2 - Content Creation Will Need To Be Re-Imagined. #ImmersiveCX Will Become Mainstream 🧠
Currently, organisations market AT customers. In the future, I expect organisations to market INTO customers (as weird as that sounds).
To be honest, I can’t really imagine what this is going to look like however I expect organisations to provide 3D, immersive experiences where customers are fully enthralled in a combined physical & digital experience.
IMAGINE 💡: You find a pair of shoes that you like whilst wearing mixed reality glasses. Immediately, you are portrayed wearing these shoes at a glamorous event, provided with a recommended outfit that would work well for your body shape & height.
Prediction #3 - Zoom / Teams Calls Will Become 3D, Completely Eliminating The Need For Physical Offices 🏢
I expect mixed reality to change the way that meetings feel. Imagine a world where you are sitting next to your team members, in the comfort of your own house. This will finally make virtual meetings feel like physical meetings.
To take this one step further, I expect there to be “hangout rooms” where people can meet up and hang out for lunch / social events.
To back up my point, I anecdotally heard a story the other day that kids under the age of 20 have more online friends, compared to in-person friends. If this is the way the world is going, I don’t see any reason for physical offices to curate social connections at work.
Prediction #4 - Haptic Suits Will Become A Common Garment Worn Under Clothes To Compliment Mixed Reality With “Feel” & “Smell” 👨🚀
A Haptic Suit (also known as VR suit, tactile suit, gaming suit or haptic vest) is a wearable device that provides haptic feedback to the body. In plain English, it is a way to attach physical sensation to a virtual experience that one is having.
As Mixed Reality capabilities start to become popular, people are going to want to attach the visual & sound sensations to other senses - touch, smell & taste. As such, I anticipate that we will begin to wear technology which compliments the mixed reality technology, as long as it is comfortable.
IMAGINE 💡: A mixed reality boxing class where you are sparring with a virtual partner. With a haptic suit, you would be able to physically FEEL every punch that the virtual partner throws at you! 🥊🥊
Prediction #5 - Hardware Support & Troubleshooting Will Become More Collaborative 🦾
Mixed reality will allow customer support to be provided in a more immersive and interactive way.
IMAGINE 💡: Using Vision Pro to create a virtual reality experience that allows customers to troubleshoot problems with their products. Instructions could be displayed to the user as they put together the flatpack. Support teams could sit in the same room as the customer, helping them fix an issue.
IMAGINE 💡: Field service technicians that, using an AI-augmented app, could look through a mixed reality device and see components labeled, even deep inside a repair. With two hands occupied with tools, a glance of an eye or a quick word could summon detailed repair instructions, or animations could be presented inside the display -- in precise alignment with the actual component being repaired.
Prediction #6 - Food Menus Will No Longer Be Written; They Will Show Each Food Item In 3D 🍔
Paper menus will be a thing of the past. As you walk into cafes, restaurants and bars, you will be able to view 3D images of each product, removing the need to stalk their instagram.
IMAGINE 💡: A menu customised to your dietary and drinking preferences. Leveraging data that you’re willing to share, restaurants could provide a fully personalised menu, with the ability to view each item in minute detail - food, ingredients & reviews.
Prediction #7 - You Will No Longer Need To Show Your Passport At The Airport 🎫
This may sound scary but I think it will become true. Mixed reality will enable next-level facial recognition & identification of humans. Whilst this will probably mean that your every move is being scrutinised, it also has some positive benefits.
IMAGINE 💡: You get off the plane and no longer have to line up for 30-60 minutes to go through customs. Your mixed reality device automatically synchronises with the customs gates, allowing you to seamlessly enter & exit countries.
Prediction #8 - You Will 10x Your Productivity Levels 📈
Think about it - mixed reality is going to allow you to complete tasks anywhere, at any time. No longer will you have to wait to get your laptop out until you get to work - you can simply sit on the train and use a virtual screen to finish that last minute task.
Similarly, journalling & mindfulness are going to become more accessible. No longer will you have to worry about looking weird on the train whilst you try to meditate. Mixed reality will provide you the inner-sanctum to complete tasks, whilst being immersed in different surroundings.
Prediction #9 - You Will No Longer Need To Look At Your Phone Whilst Driving 📵🚗
Mixed reality will allow you to drive whilst being notified of traffic conditions, navigation & text messages all in the same line of sight.
As another article eloquently articulated it, mixed reality with “seamlessly blend technology with safety”. There will be no need to switch from physical to digital world, as both worlds will merge into one.
IMAGINE 💡: A world where you can read your WhatsApp message on the same windshield that you are using to drive.
Prediction #10 - Real-Time Statistics Will Hover Above Every Players Head 🏀🏈
When you go to a sporting event now, you are reliant on the in-stadium commentary, or your mobile device, to understand the “behind the scenes” - statistics, injury updates, pre-game discussions.
In the future, you will be able to watch the physical game whilst also augmenting this with virtual overlays - physical statistics, replays, behind the scenes discussions.
IMAGINE 💡: Game 7 of the NBA finals where Lebron James Jr is wearing mixed reality glasses. You will be able to watch the game from his perspective!
Prediction #11 - Virtual Fitness Coaches Will Be Able To Stand Next To You Whilst You Complete Every Rep 🏋️♀️
I expect the fitness industry to change dramatically once mixed reality becomes mainstream. Currently, we are reliant on going to shared locations to be coached by an expert.
In the future, I predict that home gyms will become much more popular, as there will be no need for a coach to be at the same location that you train at - they can provide real-time coaching via immersive reality.
IMAGINE 💡: Stepping into a fitness space and performing exercises whilst receiving real-time guidance and corrections all in your room
